Slips

Our decorating slips are derived from our most beautiful clay bodies. Ideal for use on a variety of our clays, these slips can help you create unique and striking designs on your pieces-often using only one glaze. Because our slips are based on our clays and not stains, they will react with your glazes as our clay bodies do.

Black Raven Slip: A beautiful, jet-black slip created from our 333 Black Raven Stoneware. A flat black color when left unglazed (fired to Cone 6 or higher), the Black Raven Slip is an unique decorating tool. Paint it on a leatherhard piece for decoration or to create a surface for scraffito; inlay it into an existing carving to highlight your design. The Black Raven Slip can be fired in oxidation, reduction or salt up to Cone 10 (depending on the firing range of your clay body). In reduction the slip will become very flat, almost coal black. In salt, it will be very deep yet pick up a metallic hue (absolutely gorgeous!).
**For best look and coverage when brushing on slip: brush 2-3 coats, allowing drying time between coats. Once finished, allow decorated piece to dry slowly.

Schoolhouse Red Brick Slip: A rich, deep reddish-brown slip created from our 255 Schoolhouse Red Stoneware. A flat dark reddish color when left unglazed (fired to Cone 6 or higher), the Schoolhouse Red Brick Slip is an unique decorating tool. Keep the slip at a lowfire, its color is a traditional terracotta color. Paint it on a leatherhard piece for decoration or to create a surface for scraffito; inlay it into an existing carving to highlight your design. The Schoolhouse Red Brick Slip can be fired in oxidation, reduction or salt up to Cone 10 (depending on the firing range of your clay body). In reduction the slip will become very flat and darker brown. In salt, it will be very deep yet pick up a metallic hue (absolutely gorgeous!).
**For best look and coverage when brushing on slip: brush 2-3 coats, allowing drying time between coats. Once finished, allow decorated piece to dry slowly.

Grolleg Porcelain Slip: Enjoy the beautiful surface texture and gorgeous glazing of a true Grolleg porcelain-without the hassle of throwing or building with one! This decorating slip provides a soft, fluffy white texture when left unglazed (fired to Cone 6 or higher). Glazed, the slip will allow your colors to appear brighter and more true. Paint it on a leatherhard piece for decoration or to create a surface for scraffito; inlay it into an existing carving to highlight your design. Creates a stark color contrast on darker clay bodies, and a surface contrast with more coarse clays. The Grolleg Porcelain Slip can be fired in oxidation, reduction or salt up to Cone 10 (depending on the firing range of your clay body).
**For best look and coverage when brushing on slip: brush 2-3 coats, allowing drying time between coats. Once finished, allow decorated piece to dry slowly.

Grey Speck Slip:
Add a dark, earthy and speckled accent to your other clays. Paint it on a leatherhard piece for decoration or to create a surface for scraffito; inlay it into an existing carving to highlight your design. Creates a stark color contrast on virtually any other color of clay. The Grey Speck Slip can be fired in oxidation, reduction or salt up to Cone 10 (depending on the firing range of your clay body).
**For best look and coverage when brushing on slip: brush 2-3 coats, allowing drying time between coats. Once finished, allow decorated piece to dry slowly.
